About Us

Welcome to the Education section of Swimming New Zealand

Swimming New Zealand provides training for those involved in swimming and water safety education. Our aim is to ensure swim teachers, school teachers, parents and others within communities receive support and information and are recognised for the contribution they make in ensuring every New Zealander has the opportunity to enjoy the water safely.

We have a team of regionally based staff who are available to meet the training needs for all people wanting to teach swimming and water safety. This includes courses, workshops, qualifications and poolside assistance. We work with swimming club volunteers, professional swim teachers, parents, school teachers and other interested individuals giving them skills and knowledge to teach learn to swim to infants, children, adults and those with special needs (including people with disabilities and other cultural/linguistic requirements).

As a core member of Water Safety New Zealand, our goal is to reduce the drowning toll in New Zealand. We provide professional development around the Water Skills for Life Programme to schools and swim schools.

In partnership with AUSTSWIM and Skills Active Aotearoa, we provide training towards Level 3 and 4 qualifications for swim teachers.

Swimming New Zealand and Royal Lifesaving New Zealand collaborate to provide Bronze medallion training and assessment.

Swimming New Zealand manages the Quality Swim School accreditation programme that recognises swim schools who value training and qualifications for their staff and include water safety and community support in their philosophies.

We also cooperate with other sector organisations to improve access to swimming and water safety education across New Zealand including:

 - Surf Lifesaving New Zealand

 - Maritime New Zealand

 - Halberg Disability Sport Foundation

 - Coastguard Boating
